This movie requires that you suspend your disbelief on several occasions and relies often on Deus ex Machina. Additionally, Caleb's acting was awkward in this one. I can see what he was going for, but something was lost in the execution. Nevertheless, I love how this movie plays with gender stereotypes of the genre, does not try to water down the ugliness of vampirism (or its privilleges) and focuses on the relationship between mother and daughter, rather than on the romance. It is a weird vampire - coming of age story. The visuals are superb, though the blood could be more realistic. I don't think that it is for everyone, but, personally, I love it!

Great story. It serves its purpose as a one off with no need for fleshing out, even though much is left to the imagination as far was wondering why such a "shrine" exists, for example, or what is the history of "The Brotherhood". About that shrine, I found it intriguing that such a fantastical and ominous facility would exist on an island outpost far from human habitation. It isn't a device used in any other vampire myth or story of which I am aware. There are no scares here, only drama and dark fantasy. It's nearer the art house end of the horror spectrum. I do recommend it.

Byzantium is a middle of the road movie for me, not as good as it could be but not a bad movie either. All of the familiar elements are there including the contrast of extremes between two characters and the angst of fighting one's perception of morality. Basically if compared to Interview with the Vampire Clara is Lestat and Eleanor is Louis with the pace of the movie about the same. Where this one lacks in comparison is that I could feel how slow the pace was whereas IWTV is compelling to watch all the way through. There were elements they tried to throw in to make it different by having a lack of fangs and some sort of bizarre fountain of youth that spews Kool-Aid but it doesn't make a difference overall. Still a decent character study and i doubt anyone will regret watching it.
